Irony-the use of words to convey a meaning that is the opposite of its literal meaning

Metaphor-a figure of speech in which a term or phrase is applied to something to which it is not literally applicable in order to suggest a resemblance.

Stereotype-to characterize or regard as a stereotype

A stereotype is that Jews are evil, and how the world will be a better place with out them.

Another stereotype is that the president is a very kind man. In truth they have never met him so how would they know if he was genuinely kind? He could be really mean and snobby and just be good at being nice out in the public!

Is this example taken directly from the book, or is this a general statement?

Allusion- a passing or casual reference; an incidental mention of something, either directly or by implication

Personification- The attribution of a personal nature or character to inanimate objects or abstract notions

Symbolism-the practice of representing things by symbols, or of investing things with a symbolic meaning or character

Symbolism-

The Nazi Army was represented by a swastika. It was Hitler's sign. Every Nazi member wore a swastika and that showed they supported them, just like when we support America we put flags outside of our house.

Stars represent hope for the Jews and how no matter what happens if they believe God will pull through for them.

Personification-

Annie gave all of her dolls names and voices. Its what little kids do, when Annie got lonely she played with her dolls and when she got frightened she held them close.

Second personification??
Allusion

When Lisa imagined being in Germany with her dad. In the beginning of the story, they are all in Germany having a good time and living a good life. When they have to leave, Lisa wishes and longs for the days when she can see her dad again and she imagined being all together as a family in Germany.

When Lisa imagined being with her mother. When her mom was in the hospital, Lisa missed her alot and wanted to be with her to comfort and take care of her. Laura- Good definitions - a few of the explanations could be explained in more detail. Mrs. M 5.5.10

Individual Assignment #2

1. Define internal conflict and external conflict.

2. Choose a major character.

3. List three examples of internal and external conflict for that character.

4. Write two paragraphs - one for each kind of conflict - and elaborates on the conflicts. (What happens in the story to create the conflicts, where and when do the conflicts occur, do the conflicts get resolved, if so, how? etc.)

5. Choose a minor character.

6. Repeat steps #3 and #4 for the minor character.

7. Due date: Wednesday, May 5

8. Put assignment on your individual WIKI page. Label it Assignment #2.

Internal Conflicts:

Lisa: Main character: Internal conflicts:

She was troubled by whether or not her mother/her sister would die.

She felt they would get caught and killed.

She thought her dad was killed or taken away.

She wanted to go back to her old house and be with her old family.

The mom: internal conflicts: She worried about her children.

She worried about her husband.

She worried they would get caught.

She worried they would never be able to leave. Laura - there was no mom in the story. The girl whom Lisa was taking care of was her sister, Eva.

External conflicts:

Lisa: Main character: External conflicts:

At the camp, they weren't fed enough so she was growing weaker.

She was forced to work at the camp for food.

She was tired from not having enough food and having to run to visit her sick mother.

The mom external conflicts: External Conflicts:

She had really bad coughs.

She had to be hospilitized.

She had to get over sickness. Again, it was her sister, Eva, who had the illness and who needed medical attention.

Internal conflict is a conflict that goes on inside ones body. It is a thought or a worry or such. It is like missing someone or some sort of feeling that YOU YOURSELF are having at the time. This is a very different conflict than external conflict. External conflict is a battle outside of the mind. These kind of conflicts are very usual and are easy to pick out from stories. This could be a fight with another person, a fight with an animal, a fight with even a broken toy you are trying to fix. An external conflict is a very weird kind of conflict of standing up to someone or something. External conflicts are extremely different than internal conflicts. LAURA- YOU HAVE IDENTIFIED GOOD EXAMPLES OF CONFLICTS. READ DIRECTION #4 AND PLEASE FINISH THE ASSIGNMENT. MRS. M 5/15

Individual Assignment #3

1. Research how young people were indoctrinated into Nazism. What was the purpose of such organizations?
2. How did these organizations fit into Hitler's plan of a perfect world?
3. Write your answers in paragraph form.
4. Due date: Friday, May 7
5. Put assignment on your individual WIKI page. Label it Assignment #3.

Nazism was introduced into schools. We can infer Nazism started most likely as infants and toddlers. The Nazi's controlled the schools and the curriculum. If there was a teacher that didn’t believe and teach the Nazi ways they were fired. Teachers were sent away to 'learn' about how to be a better teacher, but this only happened if they didn’t agree with the Nazi's. This is exactly what Hitler wanted, to have a "perfect world". He wanted everyone men, women, children, elders, a babies to take part in the Nazi ways.
EXACTLY! IF EVERYONE IS BRAINWASHED - ESPECIALLY THE CHILDREN - THEY WILL NOT KNOW HOW TO THINK FOR THEMSELVES.

Individual Assignment #4

1. Define the terms 'bandwagon' and 'scapegoat'. How do those two terms relate to your novel? Explain.

2. Due Date: Tuesday, May 11

3. Put assignment on your individual WIKI page. Label it Assignment #4.

Bandwagon-Bandwagon is when people do and believe things just because a bunch of other people do. People that 'jump on the bandwagon' are people that follow the crowd even if, deep down, they believe in something else.

Scapegoat- a scapegoat is someone who is punished for the errors of others.

These terms fit my book and the whole Holocaust in general. People jumped on the bandwagon with Hitler and followed his rule. Hitler scapegoated the Jews. He made people think that all Jews are the roots of evil, and people jumped on the bandwagon and believed him. If it wasn't for peer pressure, the Holocaust may not have even happened!!! TRUE - BUT PEOPLE WERE NOT ALLOWED TO ACT INDIVIDUALLY. OUT OF FEAR, THEY DID WHAT THEY WERE TOLD. MRS. M 5/15
